Santa versus Dracula : Animated

This summer has been very busy for us!! Santa versus Dracula is done!! Whoo! Took about 6 weeks to animate. Very fun but very tedious... We barely made the August 31st deadline so there are a few minor tweaks we'd still like to make.
The animated clip it self has no credits so I'll list them here!

Ed Power - Creator / Writer
Melissa DeJesus - Direction, Design, Animation, Voice
Robert Flores - Edits, Animation assist, technical assist, voice
Albert Li - Animation assist, technical assist, voice
Sean Callahan - Voice
Alex Shum - provided music

The animation was submitted for the Fox Holiday challenge on Aniboom, so we'll see what happens. Until then, enjoy the clip!

After a long absence I return with word of: The Three Stooges!

OK, so...originally we were going to end this blog in favor of our website (www.mycagecomic.com), but since you guys keep checking here, we're going to keep both. YAY!

On the website we'll be posting more comic related stuff, and here it will be more whatever subjsct pops in out heads.

Today's topic? The new Three Stooges movie.

And it goes a little something like this:

Recently a lot has been made over the casting the new ‘Three Stooges’ movie being made by the Farrelly Brothers.

Well, actually I’m being kind of liberal with the word ‘recently’ and the phrase ‘a lot’. Let’s hear it for literary license! YAY!

Still, for those of you who don’t know the cast looks like this:

Benicio Del Toro as Moe
Sean Penn as Larry
And introducing Jim Carrey as Curly

Now, when I thought this was a bio-pic, I was ok with it (although I didn’t think it could be better then the one already done on ABC a few years ago). However, I’ve since learned this is an actual ‘Three Stooges’ movie! Like, three idiots walking around slapping each other!

And now? I’m agin it, dangnubit!

I mean, hey…to me Sean Penn will always be Spicoli from ‘Fast Times’, so seeing him return to comedy for the first time since ‘I Am Sam’ is awesome, but as LARRY F***ING FINE?!?!?!? No way!

So my disdain for the casting, and a lot of free time, have lead me to cast my own ‘Three Stooges’ movie! Since this is just for fun, I am going to cast all the Stooges through Stooge history (HA! Take that successful millionaires the Farrelly Brothers!)

Let’s begin:

Moe: Ok, Moe’s the angriest. As such, this is where Sean Penn needs to be. He is the angriest actor ever. He should play the angriest Stooge.

Larry: He was the longest running of Moe’s ‘Partners-in-Stoogedom’. No one put up with more of Moe’s crap then this guy. Hence, only one person can play this role? Robin Wright –Penn!

Curly: Curly is the greatest Stooge ever! Hence we need the greatest actor ever to play him. Now, I know what you’re thinking…De Niro! But, c’mon…that’s WAY too obvious. So, just to keep it interesting, I’m going with Meryl Streep.

Shemp: I know what you’re thinking. He’s the replacement Stooge, Ted McGinley is famous for replacing actors on TV shows, hence Ted McGinley should play Shemp. I thought the exact same thing.

BUT…

Did you know Shemp was actually a Stooge BEFORE Curly? It’s true. So, sorry…McGinley is out.

I had to attack it from another angle:

Let’s face it, there’s no better moment of a ‘Three Stooges’ short then hearing the ‘Three Blind Mice’ theme music…and nothing is more bitterly disappointing then getting to them saying ‘Hello, Hello, Hello’ at the end of it and realizing it’s a Shemp short instead of a Curly.

Hence, we need an actor who generates that same feeling of disappointment in the modern cinema. Of course I’m referring to Matthew Macanughey.

Don’t believe me? Picture this exchange:

Film Executive: “Hey! We’re making a film about your life!”

You: “AWESOME!!!!”

Film Executive: “And Matthew Macanughey is set to star in it!”

See what I mean? Macanughey IS Shemp!

Joe: Effeminate man-child no body likes? No brainer. Perez Hilton. ‘Nuff said.

Curly Joe: Curly Joe was basically a bland, marginally talented, poor man’s Curly. So with Meryl Streep playing Curly, Curly Joe shall be played by Nicole Kidman.

And there you have it: The perfect modern day ‘Three Stooges’ cast!

My work here is done.

Later!

Fun with Caricatures

My Cage tends to make reference to many shows, comics, and actors and actresses.
This month is no exception. A strip running December 26th makes reference to The Hills.
Personally I don't watch this show so it made it a little difficult to draw a caricature of any of the cast members. With some searching I chose the cuter looking girl of the bunch, Lauren Conrad.

Unfortunately, it's a small shot in the panel so I thought I show it off here. Caricatures aren't easy for me but they have been fun to draw, and since they are quick sketches, it's good practice.
Just this past Thanksgiving was an unmentioned cameo of 'Claire Bear' from Heroes. The strip featured a cheerleader so I took the liberty of drawing Claire - as a bear of course.

The 1st Regular Golden Squishy Awards!

Hey kids,

Ever been a fan of something with a 'cult' following? Well, if you're reading this blag you are!

'My Cage' is one of those things that has a small but devoted following of readers.

In one sense that's cool, because it's like being in on something special, but on the other hand it kind of sucks because...well, we could be canceled (not likely right now, but could happen in a few years). Part of a cult following is that the size of the fanbase is small in number, so if we get too 'cult' we go away.

It's the difference between being 'underground' and being 'buried'. :D

To avoid the latter, we're going to try a few new things over the next few months to try to expand our readership. This is the first of those things.

Welcome to the first ever 'Golden Squishy Awards'!!!

The Golden Squishy award will be an award we give via this blog for fans who have helped spread the word on 'My Cage'. Once we post it, if you can write in and prove that you are one of the fans listed for a 'Golden Squishy' and want to provide us a snail-mail address, we'll send you a wallet sized business card of the award so you can tell people "Hey! I have a 'Golden Squishy' in my pants!"

Goldensquishysm The first recipient of a Golden Squishy, is myspace member Lóng Zhàn Qí Shì, who put up the first 'My Cage' fan club, which you can see (or join) RIGHT HERE!

Goldensquishysm Our second recipient is Fenris the Wolf who put up our Wikipeida page, seen HERE!

Goldensquishysm The next winner is D.B Echo, who wrote a letter to the editor of his local newspaper suggesting 'My Cage'. You can read said letter on his HERE on his blog.

Goldensquishysm Also, who could forget yukiyuko on the gaiaonline.com forums, who not only posted about 'My Cage', but kept bumping HER POST for several months. Thanks Yuki! :)

And finally...

Goldensquishysm ...'wreck-gar' from the DC Comics Message Boards who has posted about the strip there a few times. As a long time DC Comics fan, it's fun to google the strip and have the DCU boards in the results.

That's it for today. I know I've missed a lot of people who have mentioned us out on the web and to newspapers (one really nice blog I can no longer fine listed us as one of the bloggers 5 favorite comic strips OF ALL TIME!!! Alongside 'The Far Side' and other strips of that caliber!), so if you or someone you know is deserving of a Golden Squishy, post here to let us know!

Until next time...

Keep on caging!!! ;)
